Tight timeline to finish water projects

- ASSAWIN PAKKAWAN

Business leaders in Songkhla have urged the government to accelerate flood prevention measures for Hat Yai, warning that fewer than 100 days remain before the monsoon season and that further delays could expose the South to another major economic setback.

The Songkhla Joint Public-Private Consultative Committee, representing 19 business organisations, called on Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to inspect flood preparedness during his planned visit to Songkhla on July 9-10 and expedite approval of key water management projects before the rainy season begins.

The private sector said Hat Yai’s flood problem has evolved from an infrastructure issue into a strategic economic risk, as the city serves as southern Thailand's commercial, tourism, transport and logistics hub.

Another severe flood would disrupt businesses across the region, including cross-border trade with Malaysia, it warned.
