What is GERD?

GERD stands for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. It occurs when stomach acid repeatedly flows backward into the food pipe (esophagus).

Normally, a valve called the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) prevents stomach contents from moving upward. When this valve becomes weak or relaxes inappropriately, acid reflux occurs.
