Tracing the Line

From silk atelier to classrooms, Hermès reveals the artistry, precision and play behind its yearlong celebration of craft.
Paris in July is a study in contrasts. The Seine sparkles under an unrelenting sun, and café terraces spill onto sidewalks packed with locals clinking glasses and tourists craning for the perfect photo for the 'gram. But behind the iconic Haussmann façades, something more deliberate is taking shape. That's where I find myself today; inside the world of Hermès, not as a spectator, but as a student.
The French fashion maison's theme of the year is Drawn to Craft, a poetic distillation of a truth that runs deep in its DNA: that every creation begins with a single line. That line—fluid, precise and intentional—is the foundation of everything Hermès stands for. And over the next two immersive days, I follow that line, going from the silk atelier to a classroom-turned-theatre of craftsmanship.
First stop is Lyon. Just a two-and-a-half-hour train ride from Paris, and I'm in the heart of France's silk capital, the birthplace of every Hermès scarf and tie. As I step into the atelier, the noise of the outside world fades. The air is hushed. You don't speak loudly here; you watch, you listen. Sunlight streams in through tall windows, illuminating rows of artisans, whose heads are bent in quiet concentration. Designs conceived by a handpicked circle of artists are brought to life here. I watch an artisan redraw a scarf design line by line, with the utmost patience and precision.
