Cartier’s legendary Tank Louis Cartier receives its most significant upgrade in decades with a new automatic movement and larger case size.
The journey of the iconic Cartier Tank watch began in 1917, born from the imaginative vision of Louis Cartier. Drawing unexpected inspiration from the Renault FT-17 tanks deployed during World War I, Cartier reimagined a military machine as an object of refined geometry, translating its crisp lines and angular silhouette into a timepiece that would shape a new era of watchmaking.
The first iteration, known as the Tank Normale, launched in 1919 with an exclusive run of just six pieces. Its rectangular case housed a square dial framed by distinctive brancards — elongated sides that also served as the bezel. Yet even then, the now-iconic Tank elements were firmly in place: elegant Roman numerals, chemin de fer or railroad minute track, blued steel hands, and a cabochon-set crown.
