In an emotional solo visit, the Princess of Wales tells of her unforgettable trip meeting children and enjoying nature
The Princess of Wales charmed Italy last week as she embarked on her first major overseas visit for the first time in almost four years. Kate hugged children, cooed over babies and even left teachers emotional as she visited Reggio Emilia on a fact-finding mission to learn about the city's approach to raising young children as part of her “life's work” with the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. At the end of the trip, which highlighted the importance of allowing young children to explore nature, she revealed the milestone visit had been “deeply moving” and “unforgettable”.
“Over the past two days in Reggio Emilia, I have seen firsthand the power of nature and creativity that put human connection at the centre of a child's world,” she wrote on social media, adding, “I have had such a deeply moving and unforgettable time here. Thank you to the people of Reggio Emilia for welcoming me into a culture of care with such warmth and generosity. “Our collective work in early childhood must be to protect and nurture the connections that form the foundations of lifelong wellbeing.” She ended the message with “Grazie di cuore, C” - meaning “thank you with all my heart”. The trip, which marked her first overseas visit since her cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment, meant time away from the sanctuary of her Forest Lodge home and her three children - Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight.
As a hands-on parent known for her involvement in the children's daily routines - such as the school run and outdoor activities - Kate continues to navigate the balance between royal duties, her early years projects and her family life.
In the past, Kate, 44, has been open about the feelings of “mum guilt” she experiences when work commitments sometimes take her away from parenting responsibilities.
