Where Are All Retailers Heading in the Gen Z Era of Indian Fashion?

The Franchising World

|

November 2025

India's biggest retail giants are locked in a new kind of battle-not for luxury, but for the mass fashion crown. As Gen Z demands trendier, cheaper, and faster fashion, brands like OWND!, Burnt Toast, Yousta, Max Fashion, Zudio, and Style Union are storming malls and high streets across the country. The race is no longer about premium labels- it's about who can own the everyday wardrobe of young India.

Where Are All Retailers Heading in the Gen Z Era of Indian Fashion?

Why Every Retail Giant Is Chasing Gen Z

Walk into any Indian mall and you'll find racks full of Y2K jeans and pastel sweatshirts, with Gen Z shoppers lining up at trial rooms holding “just-dropped” looks they spotted on Instagram the night before.

Surprisingly, it’s not global players like H&M or Zara dominating this scene. It’s Indian fashion giants—Reliance, Trent, ABFRL, and even a Biyani revival—launching trend-driven mass fashion brands. Their collective goal: own the Gen Z closet.

The Major Players

In recent years, a wave of bold, youth-focused fashion labels has emerged—spearheaded by some of India’s biggest retail names. Each brand is focused on one target: trend-loving young Indians.

Zudio (Trent / Tata Group)

Before Burnt Toast made waves, Zudio was already shaping Tata’s fashion strategy. With 500+ stores, Zudio offers fashion-forward basics under ₹999. It's known for rapid trend turnarounds and a wide product range—especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Burnt Toast may be the niche, Zudio owns the mainstream.

Burnt Toast (Trent / Tata)

Launched in August 2025 in Bengaluru, Burnt Toast brings an edgy, graffiti-inspired vibe. From gender-fluid fits to bold graphics, it’s built for college-goers who want to stand out—without overspending.

OWND! (ABFRL)

Aditya Birla has gone from legacy luxury to Gen Z streetwear. In September 2025, it rebranded Style Up stores into OWND!—a Gen Z-first label. With plans for 100 stores this fiscal and 400+ in the pipeline, OWND! is designed to be the go-to brand for trendy, affordable fashion.

Yousta (Reliance Retail)
