The barbarism of the Iranian regime is plain — the West must not look away

After relatively little in the news about the massacre of civilians inside Iran this month, the world is finally beginning to catch up on the horrors unfolding. Protests against the economic situation quickly turned to calls to bring down the government and grew to 186 towns and cities across Iran. In a television address on January 9, an order came from the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to security forces to suppress the protests “by any means necessary... shoot to kill and show no mercy”.

The master photographer at his most dazzling

Richard Avedon's groundbreaking portraits are as visually arresting and conceptually fascinating now as they were on their debut four decades ago. In fact, some of the works on display at Gagosian's main London gallery have not been seen by the public since his original exhibition, In The American West, opened at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas in 1985. The 21 works in this new show have been curated by his granddaughter, Caroline. She chose them from the 126 final images that Avedon himself selected from more than a thousand sittings.

Nolinski Venice

People tend to dismiss modern Venice as a beautiful tourist trap ruined by fleets of selfie-stick wielding holidaymakers - less of a “sinking city” than a stinking one. But Venice, as Europe's most historic merchant port, has always been chaotic. The buzz of crowds that fill the narrow streets is an indelible part of its identity. A good Venetian institution knows this trait — and wears it on its sleeve. One such place is the Nolinski Venice, a chic boutique hotel that distils the city’s propulsive energy within the confines of its vaulted ceilings and walls.

Plato would approve of this cure for loneliness

South Korea has been described as ground zero for the gender wars, with online misogyny, gender inequality and political polarisation between the sexes rife and the lowest birth rate in the world. Meanwhile, the number of single households is approaching half the population. Little wonder then that Two Women Living Together, a series of essays co-written by copywriter and podcaster Kim Hana, and magazine editor Hwang Sunwoo, about their life as female best friends living together in Seoul was a publishing sensation in the country. So successful was it that it spawned a podcast and earned the duo enough cash to pay off their shared mortgage.
