Because Black is a Thirsty Color
Carpe Nocturne|Volume XI - Fall 2016

Fall. In the beer world, this is commonly referred to as “Beer Season.”

Michael Jack
Because Black is a Thirsty Color

Thanks to our friends in Germany, and their wonderful gift to the world called Oktoberfest, the changing of leaves means the production of a style of beer that can only be referred to as heavenly. It’s called a Marzen (and is actually brewed during the Spring). The Marzen is a dark copper colored lager which generally contains strong notes of malt. People who are not into craft beers will typically like the Marzen, and people who are into craft beers will love it. Hell, we wait all year for it.

Besides the aforementioned Oktoberfest styled beers, Autumn also gives rise to a huge assortment of harvest beers. These delicacies are generally ales, and contain flavors of the season...nuts (like pecans), caramel, apple, and malt are some of the most common additions. However, the one flavor to rule them all is pumpkin. Pumpkin beers have exploded in the US. Almost every brewery makes their own version, and drinkers across the country revel in them as much (if not more) as they do for the Marzen. Like I said, Fall is beer season, and there are plenty of offerings to make even the most discerning of critics smile and throw down another.
