MDEC: Being on the front lines of driving Malaysia towards a digital future.
On 10 May 2016, the infamous action-adventure PlayStation 4 (PS4) game, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was finally released after experiencing multiple delays from the original launch date. Earning the reputation as one of PS4’s most successful titles, Uncharted 4 is said to be the franchise’s final installment with spectacular visuals that every real gamer would drool for.
Anyone who set eyes on the game play would definitely congratulate the game developers - Naughty Dog, which incidentally also developed another well-received game, an action-adventure survival horror video game known as The Last of Us. But did you know that towards the final phases of Uncharted 4, Naughty Dog was short of time and had to seek out a company who can take on some last-minute work as the game’s release have been rescheduled a number of times as it is.
Surprisingly, the job was then assigned to Passion Republic, a local studio that also took part in developing popular games like Batman: Arkham Knight, Mortal Kombat X, Dark Souls III and Shadow Of The Beast, among others. The Malaysian-based digital art outfit played the critical role of producing an extensive list of art assets for Uncharted 4 within the time frame of six weeks. Now, that is saying something!
Of course, being the committed mover of the Malaysian videogame industry, MDEC (Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation) aided Passion Republic in seeing through the opportunity.
In an interview with Business Today, Dato’ Yasmin Mahmood, CEO of MDEC states that Malaysia needs more high potential companies like Passion Republic in order to transform the country’s digital economy and turn Malaysia into a fullydeveloped nation by the year 2020.
