HOW MANY FUTURISTIC CONCEPTS have Jaguar teased us with since the V12 powered the XJ220 in 1988 - but not followed through with? There are many, but that is why concepts are brought to life.
The V12 XJ220 supercar, which caused ten mile long stoppages on the M5 Motorway as excited visitors crammed into the NEC to see the unexpected Jaguar, didn't come to fruition. At least not as a V12 despite specifications in the original brochures. In more modern times the C-X75 is the outstanding tease.
In May 2011 Jaguar announced a limited production of the C-X75 to be built between 2013 and 2015. It would have a compact, forced induction petrol engine, combined with electric motors instead of the micro gas turbines in the first concept car.
A maximum of 250 cars were planned to be built in partnership with Williams F1, and the production version was expected to have an all-electric range of 50 kms (31 miles).
In December 2012, the company announced the cancellation of production due to the on-going global economic crisis. The bad news was not revealed before five developmental prototypes were built in the production car specifications.
The model was featured in the 2015 movie Spectre, the twenty-fourth James Bond film in which seven C-X75s were supplied to the film makers. Not all were runners, or built to correct specifications, having a space frame chassis with panels hung on it rather than a carbon-fibre tub. Quietly though, a number of them have been sold off to collectors.
Now it's the turn of the all electric powered Vision Gran Turismo SV, and in promoting it Jaguar seems to have teased the possibility of a racing return to Le Mans and Daytona through their publicity images at least.
The Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo SV is a concept car made by Jaguar for the Vision Gran Turismo project. It is the racing version of the earlier Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupé.
We should all take it seriously though, because Jaguar Special Vehicles built a full sized car which debuted to the public at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2021. Gran Turismo games incorporate cars created by real manufacturers - and which have to work in virtual reality to specifications usable in the real world. It is also true electric sports racers are destined for Le Mans and other endurance races in the not so distant future.
There has always been hope that new Le Mans Hypercars would lead to another golden age of sports car racing, and now Ferrari’s recent announcement that it would be building its own hypercar has raised expectations even higher.

SERIOUS UP-DATES MAKE IT BETTER - AND IT'S DIESEL F-pace next level
THE F-PACE IS JAGUAR'S BEST SELLING MODEL AND continues to improve in all ways. The 2021 upgrades are sensational to the point where it now feels close to an XJ from the driver or passenger seats. It is that luxurious. It is multi-purpose too, so aside from family duties, it will handle the dirty stuff like a dedicated SUV and, encouragingly, Jaguar really has got its head around what the F-PACE was capable of achieving from its inception.
Should historic cars be raced at full tilt? Make up your own mind after learning how this ex-Australian C-Type was virtually destroyed.
