EXTRAVAGANZA EXTRAORDINAIRE

EVERY YEAR, Scheid Diesel Extravaganza continues to increase in stature and draw people by the thousands from all over the U.S., Canada, and a few other points around the globe, to the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds in Terra Haute, Indiana.

EXTRAVAGANZA EXTRAORDINAIRE

With some of the best weather Terre Haute has experienced in a few years, the crowds descended on the fairgrounds by the truckload, ready to enjoy everything Scheid Diesel Extravaganza 2019 had to offer. There was no shortage of people gathered at the dyno hoping to see a big horsepower hit or walking through the midway, talking to vendors about the next big upgrade they want to install on their truck. At times, the throng of bodies made it difficult to get a clear view of trucks displayed in the show-’n’-shine area. The Outlaw Diesel Super Series had a great crowd of drag-racing enthusiasts taking in the high-horsepower blasts down the track. And the ever-popular Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League drew in spectators that packed the stands on both nights of the show.

A slight difference at this year’s Extravaganza compared to years past was the change to a two-day format. For many years, the event had been set up over a three-day period so event patrons were able to see everything Scheid has to offer, including the dirt-flying Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League and Outlaw Diesel Super Series eighth-mile excitement.

With the condensed schedule—and to reduce the amount of walking for showgoers—a shuttle system was put in place at the Wabash Fairgrounds. The people movers (which were tractors towing hay trailers with benches mounted to them) ran through the main area of the event (dyno, show ’n’ shine, sled pull, and vendor midway),parking areas, and out to the Crossroads Dragway, making it easy to get around.

For 2019, Scheid Diesel Service continued its tradition of putting on a great show by which most other diesel events will be measured. In it’s 22 nd year, SDX is still the premier destination for diesel enthusiasts.

Getting (Un)Stuck

IN THE FIRST installment of this series, I explained how I, along with my wife and two dogs, took Vincent Van Go, my new-tome ’03 Ford E-350 with the venerable 7.3L powerplant, on his first adventure—and wound up at a secluded campsite (aptly named Camp Nada Lotta) in the Southern California desert.

Torque: Rotary Diesel No Pistons Needed

Building a diesel engine that does not use traditional pistons may seem odd, but in today’s modern age of high efficiency, low emissions, and weight reduction, an engine with a nonconventional rotor may be the key to things to come.
