A couple of years ago I picked up a ‘restored’ W650 Kawasaki, and soon found that, although it looked great, it was in terrible condition under its new black paint. It was my thirdW650 and, having learnt a lot from the first two, I decided to give this bike the best of everything, while still remaining as true as possible to the original idea and soul of the W650. My goal was to build a vintage-style Desert Sled with modern handling, comfort and performance that was reliable, and fast, and still maintain the ’60s style, with a clean and polished finish to it. It took over a year. Everything was done slowly and meticulously, every nut and bolt was agonised over, and there were a few changes in direction but, in the end, I think I’ve achieved my goal – a close to-perfect modern Sled.

THE SLED
I’M A SEMI-PRO SHED BUILDER, WHO BUILDS UNDER THE NAME DIRTY DICK’S… I SAY ‘SEMIPRO’ BECAUSE I’VE ONLY, AT THE TIME OF WRITING, SOLD TWO BIKES (AND, USUALLY, I GET PAID IN BEER FOR ANY OTHER WORK I DO).
THE CHIEF
I BOUGHT MY ENFIELD, A 2001 350 BULLET, IN SHROPSHIRE IN JUNE 2019, WITH JUST 11,000 MILES ON THE CLOCK. IT WAS IN TRIALS TRIM, BUT I ALREADY HAD IN MY HEAD WHAT I WANTED TO DO WITH IT – MAKE IT INTO A ‘50S-STYLE CUSTOM, BASED LOOSELY AROUND AN INDIAN SCOUT THAT I’D SEEN PICTURES OF.
