The first season (1890-1891) of the Egypt Exploration Fund’s survey set out to explore monuments along a 25km stretch of the Nile, including the Middle Kingdom cemetery at Beni Hasan, where governors and administrators were buried. Under field director Percy Newberry, surveyor George Willoughby Fraser recorded the architecture and locations of the tombs, while artist Marcus Blackden helped Newberry copy their decoration, and produced colour facsimiles of key details, like the birds from the tomb of Khnumhotep II (shown below).

THE GREAT BEYOND
The ancient Greeks thought much about the dead – how their remains should be disposed of, how their spirits might be summoned, how malignant they could be if unavenged. Classicist David Stuttard brings us face to face with the Greek dead.
INTO THE VALLEY OF THE QUEENS
The Great Royal Wife of Ramesses II, Nefertari, was buried in one of the most spectacular tombs of Egypt’s Valley of the Queens. Well-educated and well-travelled, Nefertari played a crucial part in the political life of the pharaoh, and her importance was reflected through her magnificently decorated tomb. Lucia Marchini speaks to Jennifer Casler Price to find out more.
DEIR EL-BAHRI, 1894
Tensions were already high among the archaeologists, surveyors, and artists of the Archaeological Survey of Egypt in 1891 when an eventful dispute arose on Christmas Eve.
When the Etruscans expanded to the south and the vast plains of Campania, they found a land of cultural connections and confrontations, as luxurious grave goods found across the region reveal. An exhibition at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples sheds light on these ancient Italians at the frontier. Paolo Giulierini, director of the museum, is our guide.

B&B: CARTER CAN'T QUIT QUINN
Though they’re supposed to be keeping their distance, Carter and Quinn can’t keep their hands off each other, and the guilt is getting the best of Carter. “They just feel safe with each other,” explains Lawrence SaintVictor (Carter). “No matter how much they try to deny each other — and they do try — they just can’t stop. Whatever this is, it is not going to just disappear, and they don’t know how to shake it. It’s impacting their personal lives, and their relationships with their family and friends. They just can’t put a stop to these feelings.”
B&B: CARTER AND QUINN RECONNECT
Carter struggles to pick up the pieces in the wake of the reveal about him and Quinn. “The heartbreak here is unbearable,” sighs Lawrence Saint-Victor (Carter). “But, there’s also a weird sense of relief, like, ‘It’s finally over.’ The excruciating guilt of trying to hide something and not being able to keep eye contact when you’re in the same room, it was terrible, and at least that part is over.”
