Oh, my word, we can finally get a dog!” – those were my first words to my boyfriend the day we bought our house. Long before I thought about beds or a fridge or anything else that needed to fill up our home, the first thing I thought about was our little fur-baby.
We’d always discussed adopting a dog – we’d both grown up with animals in our homes and we knew that as soon as we had a place for ourselves, we’d want to give a rescue dog a home. Deciding where we wanted to adopt from was actually really easy. Medical institutions are recognizing the innate abilities dogs have to tune in to humans and their feelings. Cancer centers and behavioral health practices have been perhaps the most visible in animal-assisted therapy.
