'Young people's vision is worth believing in'

WHEN more than 2,800 young people from Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire took part in the recent youth consultation, they gave us something remarkable, a roadmap for a better future, not only for themselves but for all of us.

- Daniel Flynn - Chief Executive of YMCA North Staffordshire

'Young people's vision is worth believing in'

HOPE: Young people have been asked to give their views on what they need for the future.

Their voices are clear, hopeful, and full of heart.

What they're asking for isn’t extravagant or impossible. They're asking for connection, respect, fairness, and opportunity, the same foundations every strong community is built on.

Reading their words reminded me why I love this city and why I believe in its people.

Young people told us they want:

■Mental-health support that is easy to find and free of stigma;

■Affordable and safe homes;

■Youth spaces that feel welcoming and inclusive;

■Education that prepares them for real life;

■Accessible jobs and training routes;

■Communities that care about the environment;

Stronger relationships with the police and local services;

■Help for those experiencing poverty;

■Visible role models;

■A say in the decisions shaping their future.

Ten simple recommendations, but together they describe a place where everyone belongs and contributes.

What inspired me most was the optimism threaded through the report.

Despite the challenges many face, from housing insecurity to the cost-of-living crisis, young people still speak with hope.
