This month architect and interior design expert Denise O'Connor shares eight essential considerations to create your dream haven.

The Perfect Outdoor Space

Designing the perfect outdoor space requires thoughtful planning and consideration. As our gardens evolve into extensions of our living spaces, the desire to enhance and utilise these outdoor areas grows stronger. Planning the ideal outdoor space may appear daunting and costly, but proper planning is essential. As we approach the end of summer, now is the perfect time to explore eight key considerations that will help you create your ideal outdoor space for the upcoming seasons and beyond.

MAKE A LIST OF NEEDS AND WANTS

Begin by identifying your priorities and requirements for the outdoor space. Consider factors such as the need for a play area for children, outdoor dining and entertainment space, or the desire to have an outdoor cooking area. Create a list of your needs and wants, and use it as a foundation for developing a plan. Sketch rough ideas to visualise how you would like to use your outdoor space effectively.

PLAN FOR CHANGE

Anticipate how your needs may evolve over time. While you may require a play area for small children now, consider how the space can adapt as they grow older. To ensure a garden that can evolve without incurring significant expenses, opt for a simple and multifunctional design. Create a central space that can be adjusted as the surrounding plants mature, ensuring your garden remains versatile and relevant.

BE REALISTIC ABOUT MAINTENANCE

Understand that every garden requires maintenance, so be prepared to invest time and effort regularly. While low-maintenance options are available, even these spaces require some care. Choose ground-covering shrubs and feature trees over high-maintenance herbaceous planting to simplify garden maintenance. Avoid softwood decking as it demands more upkeep and has a limited lifespan.
