If your house is more The Nightmare Before Christmas than The Holiday during the festive season, you might prefer to give Christmas movies a wide berth. When the kids are on the verge of killing each other and your in-laws have definitely overstayed their welcome, the last thing you feel like doing is to curl up on the sofa and watch a Christmas film - especially when it's mostly all smug couples falling in love, or picture-perfect families in their over-the-top, decked-out Christmassy homes.

On the other hand, it might be just the right antidote and source of escapism when the reality of the festive season gets a bit too much.

Love them or hate them, Christmas movies certainly seem to divide opinion. So we ask: are they a bit of harmless fun, or a tired formula we could do without?
