Boost your health AS YOU SLEEP

Many of us spend time and effort planning how to improve our health and wellness levels during the daytime, but did you know that there are also simple tips and tricks to reap body and mind benefits while you're sound asleep? Our experts show us the easy things we can do to take restorative rest to the next level.

Lie on your back

Looking to improve your posture while you sleep? Sleep health expert Dan Fabian (tenpm.co) says that 'the soldier' - on your back, arms by your side - is one of the best positions for spinal alignment and maintaining good posture.

'Sleeping like this helps keep the spine, neck and head in a neutral position, reducing the risk of back and neck pain,' he says. Worried about snoring? Keeping the head slightly elevated with one pillow can help reduce this.

Use allergen eye drops

Eyes that are sensitive to allergens, such as dust or pet dander, can feel itchy, puffy, red or watery. You might be more susceptible as you sleep due to those that have settled on your bedding and pillows. 'When allergens affect the eyes, the body releases histamine and blood vessels in the conjunctiva - the lining of the eye - enlarge and swell, causing a reaction known as allergic conjunctivitis,' explains pharmacist Sultan Dajani (goldeneyecare.co.uk). Using allergen-relief drops before bed means the medication works overnight, helping to reduce redness, itching and swelling that can often feel worse in the morning.

A TASTE OF THE PAST

There's something strange about us Brits. Why are we so nostalgic for the cuisine of yesteryear? I don't believe food was better in my childhood - quite the opposite.
