'Disheartening': Tarriela on lawmakers' luxury air assets vs PCG's limited aircraft

Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela on Friday, September 26, raised concern over the widening gap between the luxurious air assets owned by some lawmakers and the limited fleet available to government agencies such as the Philippine Coast Guard.

His remarks came after the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) formally asked the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) to freeze the aircraft of companies linked to Ako Bicol Representative Zaldy Co.
The list reportedly includes a Gulfstream 350 private jet and several helicopters registered under firms associated with the lawmaker.
"While I do not accuse anyone of wrongdoing or guilt, it is disheartening to see a legislator possessing numerous air assets," Tarriela said in a post on X.
He said that the Philippine Coast Guard operates only three fixed-wing planes and two helicopters for critical maritime domain awareness missions in the West Philippine Sea and other parts of the country's waters.
