Cebu exporters brace for tariff hike impact

The move—expected to send economic shockwaves across global trade routes—has sparked concern and cautious optimism among exporters and industry stakeholders.

In a statement, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) described the development as a “wake-up call” for exporters and policy-makers alike.

"Any increase in tariffs will hurt the sales volume and competitiveness of specific products,” the chamber warned.

The United States remains the Philippines’ largest export market, with outbound goods valued at US$12.1 billion in 2024—accounting for 16.6 percent of total Philippine export revenues.

Electronics make up 53 percent of those exports, underscoring the Philippines’ key role in supplying semiconductor, telecommunications equipment, and other electronic components to American markets.

Despite the looming impact, the CCCI sees a silver lining in the current tariff landscape. At 17 percent, the Philippine rate remains one of the lowest in the ASEAN region, surpassed only by Singapore’s 10 percent—giving the country a rare competitive edge.

"This could serve as an incentive for Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs), particularly in production facilities here in Cebu,” the CCCI noted.
