ALASKA SUMMIT Donald Trump meets Vladimir Putin today
VLADIMIR Putin has described Donald Trump as “sincere" in his efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
The Russian president also praised the US leader for making “quite energetic and sincere efforts to stop combat activities”.
He said Trump was trying “to stop the crisis and reach agreements that are of interest to all the sides involved in the conflict”.
He added: “[Trump’s trying] to create long-term conditions for peace.”
Trump said he will call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to arrange a second meeting if his summit with Putin is successful.
At a meeting in No10 Downing Street, the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Zelensky said there is “strong resolve” for peace.
The location of the Trump/Putin summit is said to be the only base in Alaska that can meet the security requirements of the two leaders.
Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, which is in the city of Anchorage, dates back to 1940 and played an important role for the US in the Cold War with the Soviet Union.
Trump said he is already thinking about the second summit - which, he hinted, European leaders might get an invite to.
Speaking from the Oval Office at the White House, the US President said: “We have a meeting with President Putin tomorrow, I think it's going to be a good meeting.
PEACE
