Party is behind former minister

- CIARA O'LOUGHLIN

FORMER minister Heather Humphreys will be Fine Gael's candidate for autumn’s presidential election.

The ex Cavan-Monaghan TD confirmed yesterday she put her name in the hat following the party's executive council meeting on Monday.

MEP Sean Kelly also put himself forward. Both need 20 signatures from Fine Gael’s parliamentary party for an official contest.

However, Ms Humphrey's has support from 38 out of 57 members.

This means Mr Kelly could not receive the required 20 for an internal contest to take place.
