Barometer confirms window for political settlement

Once again, Sri Lanka is at a crossroads. After decades of missed opportunities and delayed reforms, the conditions are there for a lasting political resolution of the ethnic conflict. The NPP government has the chance to resolve the country’s longest and most divisive conflict through Sri Lankan institutions, on its own terms. The government holds a two-thirds majority in parliament that allows it to amend the constitution and introduce the reforms that past governments promised but failed to deliver. It came to power on the back of a popular demand for system change, and the public expectation that followed that election was not for minor adjustments but for a deep restructuring of the state. The opposition is neither strong nor dominated by the racist and extremist voices that in the past sabotaged every attempt at reconciliation.

How to avoid falls

Falls are one of the most common threats to the health and independence of older adults. They can turn an ordinary day into a frightening experience with painful consequences that go far beyond bruises. A fall can lead to broken bones, a long hospital stay and the loss of confidence needed to move about freely. The good news is that many falls are not a part of normal ageing and simple measures can greatly reduce the risk.

Is dishonesty being normalised?

It is inevitable that societies change with time and so do norms but, unfortunately, it is not always for the better. Minority view prevails at times. We live in an era when, at least in the West, there can be two husbands or two wives in a marriage with adopted children being brought up in these unusual circumstances. Mostly due to the pressure by celebrities these marriages have been equated to traditional marriages where one of the functions is procreation which contributes to the survival of the species, which these same-sex marriages are not able to achieve. By highlighting this anomaly, I am in no way being critical of anyone’s sexual preferences, which is their own concern, but merely wondering whether the pendulum has swung too far!
