In January, Glasgow becomes a stage for stories and song at the Celtic Connections festival

FOR more than 30 years, Celtic Connections has been a highlight in Scotland’s event calendar.

And this year, as Glasgow is gearing up to host the Commonwealth Games, the programme is packed with energy and performances to match.

Over 1,200 artists will be performing at more than 300 events taking place across 25 venues in the city between January 15 and February 1.

“It has become a cliché now, but it’s such a dark month, January, and you've had the chaos and the brilliance of Christmas,” says songwriter, composer and broadcaster Roddy Hart. “Traditionally, it’s hard to gig as a musician — loads of people just want to stay indoors. Having that festival there is a beacon in the darkness that allows people to have an excuse to come out.”

“It’s two weeks of wall-to-wall concerts, gigs and musical moments,” he adds. “There’s just no shortage of things for all musical tastes to enjoy. It’s great for the musicians, it’s great for the Scottish musical community, and it’s great for the travelling musical community, who are coming in from all over the world to perform at it.”
