Big Burns Supper

Dumfries, January 15-25

January is the month of all things Burns. While there are plenty of events happening across Scotland (turn the page for more suggestions), one of the biggest is happening in Dumfries.

The Big Burns Supper is not a big sit-down meal, but a series of events for all the family to enjoy. Happening around Burns Day are dazzling light installations, various Burns suppers, two late-night ceilidhs, live music, a food market, and more. Plus, the Burns Light installation will light up the Burns Mausoleum with a dynamic display of colour and sound, retelling the story of Robert Burns.

South Queensferry, January 1

If you're looking to take the plunge and try something different in 2026, why not embrace one of Scotland's newer, quirkier New Year's Day traditions? First started by a small group of friends in 1987 - supposedly as a hangover cure after Hogmanay - the Loony Dook now sees hundreds of people brave the cold waters of the Firth of Forth in South Queensferry every year. It has grown in size over the years, and the ways people join in has evolved along with it, with fancy dress now being a common sight!
