ARCHITECTURE IS NOT ENOUGH: WHY HIREN PATEL DESIGNS WITH ART AT THE CORE

|July 2025
In a world increasingly defined by speed and spectacle, Hiren Patel's architectural philosophy stands as a quiet, powerful reminder of what truly matters; connection, emotion, and the human experience.
With over three decades of practice, the Ahmedabad-based architect continues to craft spaces that transcend functionality, weaving art, nature, and mindfulness into every design decision.
In this enriching conversation, Hiren Patel opens up about the evolution of his design thinking, the subtle power of verandas, the essence of sustainability, and the quiet strength of artistic collaborations.
His words reveal not just an approach to architecture, but a way of living; one that honours responsibility, timelessness, and heart.
You've often emphasised the transformative power of art in architecture. Can you share a moment or project where art unexpectedly reshaped the design direction or emotional impact of a space?
Art is embedded in our philosophy at HPA.
A prime example is the Amoeba Office project in Surat. We challenged the norm of sealed, air-conditioned cubicles and instead introduced verandas; semi-open spaces that encouraged interaction and connection with nature. These verandas became an unexpected yet thriving meeting hub, filled with natural light and fresh air.
To further elevate the experience, we collaborated with renowned sculptor Parva Desai, incorporating his work throughout the open corridors. The result? A vibrant space that feels more like an art gallery than a conventional office; an environment that inspires both creativity and calm.
Your strong grasp of landscape design is a defining aspect of your work. But how do you balance nature and built form in dense urban settings with limited green space?
It's about intention and sensitivity.
