We thought younger generations were the active ones, but it turns out that’s not the case.

Are We Getting Fitter At 50?

Sometimes we’d love to have the energy we once had as a twenty something – nimble, full of beans and the ability to recover quickly. But these millennials haven’t got anything on the over-50s if the results of a new survey are anything to go by.

In fact, those over the age of 50 are exercising more than those in their 20s and 30s – 26 minutes per week to be exact, according to the survey conducted for orthopaedic support company Neo G.

It’s a lifestyle

Amy Wright is an integrative nutrition health coach working with food company Itsu. She points out that in the past, healthy living and fitness weren’t commonplace trends like they are now.

‘With more emerging research into the benefits of a lifestyle that adopts good nutrition and exercise, the emphasis has moved from aesthetic goals towards more holistic ideals such as longevity, energy and quality of life’, she tells us.

Why it's never too late to get in shape

Getting in shape - what does that even mean? Well, to me it means this: working at achieving a good muscle mass to body fat ratio (that you, personally, are happy with). Plus, well-supported joints, good bone density, a high level of strength (to avoid future injury, improve balance and boost metabolic health) and a good diet to fuel both your activities and a healthy gut (a flourishing microbiome rules our health!).
