WHILE IT STILL looks like the work of science fiction, the BMW i8 coupé is now four years old, and therefore due a facelift. Although it looks much the same externally if you discount the new Donington Grey paint, you’ll find a number of changes if you dig a little deeper.

Under the skin is a new, more power-dense battery pack that allows the front-mounted electric motor to produce a little more power. Crucially, it also increases the real-world electric-only range from 23 miles to 34, potentially making the car more economical if you can charge it up.
