All-new electric sports SUV promises agility and driving pleasure; can it deliver? On sale Early 2026 Price from £60,000 (est)

- DAN JONES

Alpine A390

FRENCH BRAND ALPINE is best known for making lightweight and agile sports cars. Those are two traits that don't typically go hand in hand with electric cars, but they're exactly what the Renault-owned company is aiming for with its all-new A390 electric SUV.

In fact, Alpine wants to break the mould by disguising the car's two-tonne heft and making it feel like a sports car to drive. A pretty tall order, we're sure you'll agree, and it's one that Lotus failed to achieve with its Eletre SUV.

Longer and slightly lower than the Renault Scenic with which it shares its basic underpinnings, the A390 is equipped with three electric motors - two for the back wheels and one for the fronts. The total power output depends on which version you go for, with the GT making 396bhp and the GTS 463bhp.

Put your foot down hard in the latter - the version we've tested so far - and it feels every bit as rapid as its 3.9sec 0-62mph time suggests, especially when you hit the red 'overtake' button on the steering wheel to access full power. In fact, it's about as quick as the new Porsche Macan Electric GTS (see p21), but still a little slower than the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

imageWhen you aren't using the overtake button, an 89kWh (usable capacity) battery yields an official range of up to 354 miles (for the GT), or 323 miles if you go for the GTS. That isn't quite as far as most versions of the Macan Electric and Tesla Model Y can travel between top-ups, but farther than the Ioniq 5 N.
