The rugged landscape of her native West Yorkshire and the simple beauty of vessels, flowers and vintage ceramics inspire this painter’s richly textured works.

Debbie George

Found items, pottery, childhood treasures and the natural world are each reflected in the wonderfully layered paintings of artist Debbie George. She graduated from Bretton Hall College in 1991 with a degree in Fine Art and her work quickly became characterised by its unstructured and wistful quality.

“I have been drawing and painting since I can remember, and my love of pottery and ceramics began at school. Initially, I wanted to be a potter and I studied at Bretton Hall, but after a few months I switched to Fine Art. I think my love of ceramics still comes through in my work. I just paint vessels now instead of making them.

I love the natural world; without it I’d have nothing to paint. Flowers are a constant source of inspiration. I especially love spring blooms and I grow many in my garden, including snowdrops, primroses, tulips and cowslips. If I wasn’t an artist, I’d be a gardener. I also draw while on holiday, which means that favourite landscapes, such as those of Scotland and Cornwall, often appear in the distance in my paintings.
