One cannot always find an architect who has the insight and skills to conceive appropriate ideas for spatial interventions and can produce them to meticulous detail. Hirante Welandawe’s practice, HW Architects stands out as one in Sri Lanka with such a profile.
Among the younger and contemporary architects who follow in the footsteps of the forefathers–who built with sensitivity to earth–yet search for authenticity and truthfulness through modern architecture, is Sunil Gunawardana.
A rustic yet contemporary setting, the Machang pub and restaurant, in Ja-Ela, conceptualises a meeting place for those who are looking to relax with friends or family, without the hassle of having to spending too much.
The need to carefully tread the earth during all human interventions is now well known. Being design friendly to the mother earth is now at the forefront of the thinking of creative designers leading to inventive products.
Only rarely will we see the enclosed space being celebrated while the building architecture is skillfully executed with professionalism and mastery, yet also with humility and humbleness.
