Black and white, yin-yang, positive-negative are some contrasts that bring about a wholesome balance. Such is the outdoor-indoor relationships of a building and its immediate outdoor environment at a basic level. The landscape professional sees the entire city as an urban landscape, while the architect translates the same city to be a built environment.
Many large cities in Asia are the legacy of colonial rulers - built for their own purpose and use, but usually with great respect for local traditions. The colonial imagery may include buildings, streetscapes, parks or other landmarks.
A city is not defined by one street or one building, but there are always some streets that seem to capture the essence of a city - its vibrancy, its character and its very pulse. The residence of Architect Suchith Mohotti, set in 25 perches on reclaimed marshland in Pepiliyana is, in the architect's own words, "a nice place to hang out." A brief visit to his home proved that he was indeed right, and there were many unique advantages to living on the outskirts of a city.
