The month of May is of special signifificance to Buddhists the world over. It is the month of Vesak for them. The full moon day in May – the 24th this year – commemorates the Birth, Enlightenment and Parinibbana – Passing Away of the Buddha.

Ninety miles from the capital city of Colombo, Matale nestles in the hilly central province. It occupies a very signifificant place in the annals of Sri Lanka’s history, which had a profound impact on the history of Buddhist thought and development.

The muezzin’s reverberating call to the faithful to come for prayers at dawn seems like a signal which bestirs the sleepy hub of Cinnamon Gardens in the heart of the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo.

Located in Waturagama, Gampaha, it is believed that the history of the Maligathenna Temple runs back to the time of the Anuradhapura Kingdom.
