Finance Minister announced the budget for FY2016-17 & the highlight of
the budget was that the government has decided to stick to its fiscal deficit
target at 3.9% of GDP in the year ending March 31, 2016, and 3.5% of GDP
in the next fiscal year. Economists across the board were relieved that the
government would not miss those targets, as was expected.
A budgetary allocation of Rs. 2.21 lakh crore for infrastructure sector is a
crucial move to revive investments in the sector with the participation of the
private players. The roads sector alone has been allocated Rs. 97,000 crore as
the government plans to award 10,000 kilometres of new road projects in
FY17, including Rs. 19,000 crore earmarked for rural roads under the Pradhan
Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna.
