The month of January brings the call of Adam’s Peak, known as Sri Paada – the Sacred Footprint, where pilgrims come in thousands to worship the footprint of the Buddha.
The Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, is a historic Buddhist shrine with celebration of the Duruthu Full Moon in January. It is place considered sacred by the visit of the Buddha nearly 3000 years ago. The Polonnaruwa Archaeological Museum, in the medieval capital of Sri Lanka reveals many attractions from historic artefacts, tools and weapons of the time, situated by the Parakrama Samudra – the Sea of Parakrama The Hindus of Sri Lanka celebrate the “Thai Pongal” festival, with respect and worship to the Sun God, for all blessings received for good harvests. It is a family festival.
The Maduro Oya National Park, which protects the catchments of five reservoirs is home to the Sri Lankan Elephant in the wild found in large herds, and many other animals including the wild Buffalo, Deer, the Water Monitor, many species of snakes, crocodiles and fish in the waterways.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy a range indigenous and foreign linked foods is a cuisine developed through the centuries, and strongly influenced later by Portuguese and Dutch tastes.
