economic reforms was anointed India’s 
prime minister. For the first time, a technocrat with humongous experience 
as a bureaucrat was assuming that office. 
Many believed that this would be a game changer. 10 years on, there is a whipped up mood of pessimism, with the nation crying for change. Was it all that bad?

Let’s look at some bald numbers

In 1991, India stood on the brink of economic bankruptcy. She had reserves equivalent to just a week of our 
import bills. Today we have reserves which can pay up seven months of imports. In the backdrop of a growing current account deficit, falling GDP growth, rising inflation and depreciating rupee, there is a clear 
need for inflow of dollars. But the direction is in fact 
opposite. Over the last few years Indian companies, instead of investing in India are investing globally.

In India we failed to tackle inflation during 2008-13. Throughout this period, inflation, rather than economic growth, raged in double 
digits. And there can be no denying that the Central government and the Reserve Bank are 
at fault. The Congress was smashed at the hustings, thanks substantially to the failure of the 
UPA II government to tackle inflation.

Automobile industry is facing a crunch. While 
urban customers continue to stay away from vehicle showrooms,
