Lock, Stock & Barrel

No serious argument can be waged against the reality that a rifleman with real talent, whether natural or hard-earned through training, can shoot exceptionally well at targets of unknown distances with about any rifle and cartridge combination, given a little time to work out any minor kinks.

British Pattern 1914 .303

When the British entered World War I, their army actually wanted to transition to a more modern rifle than its Short Magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE) chambered for the likewise obsolete .303 British cartridge, which originated in the late 1880s as a black-powder cartridge.

Mossberg MVP Patrol 5.56 NATO

Shortly after Mossberg announced the MVP (Mossberg Varmint Predator) rifle in 2011, I was invited to spend three days in central Oregon shooting ground squirrels and hunting coyotes with several model variations chambered in 5.56 NATO and .204 Ruger. I fired in excess of 1,500 rounds through several rifles that were accurate and very interesting.

6.5 Short Action Ultra Magnum

We will never know for certain who was first to neck down the 7mm Remington Short Action Ultra Mag case for .264-inch bullets, but George Gardner of GA Precision is the person who put the wildcat on the map. In addition to being a serious participant in Precision Rifle Series competition, he is one of its strongest supporters as well.

6.5 Creedmoor

About the time shooters start imagining that every gap among commercial rifle cartridges has been filled, another round fills a crack so small most of us didn’t know it existed. Among the recent crack-fillers is a Hornady creation called the 6.5 Creedmoor.

Rifle Barrel Bedding

Barrel bedding is an often hotly debated subject, with strong opinions for the virtues of free floating and equally good cases made for partial and full-length bedding. Based on the ongoing controversy, it is with certain reservations that I share a few thoughts and experiences.

Long-Range Optics, Tools And Technology

Most rifle shooters fire a few shots at a target before hunting season opens, and a few more during deer season. During the remainder of the year, the rifles sit in the back corner of a closet. Formal and casual long-range target shooting, though, provide the opportunity to shoot all year in different conditions to increase skill, learn about ballistics and the mysteries of bullets in flight.

Down Range

Set triggers are an anachronism; a holdover from a bygone era. Immensely popular in their heyday, my bet would be that the vast majority of today’s riflemen and hunters are not familiar with them at all. In simple terms, a “set trigger” is a mechanism by which a rifle is fired with a trigger pull weight measured in ounces instead of pounds. It is meant for precise shooting and not for fast shooting – or what some hunters might call “snap” shooting.

Custom Corner

As a kid running around the farm during the summer, I always had my uncle’s little Winchester single shot to ply the fields for small game. At that time it seemed every manufacturer had a rimfire rifle of some kind, so it was not uncommon for Remington to also have one of its own on the market. One of the more popular rifles was the Model 12 pump, or slide action, introduced in 1909, and for this installment of “Custom Corner,” we have one reworked and decorated to the highest degree.

Ballistics And Statistics

Statistics: the branch of mathematics that deals with the collection, organization and interpolation of numerical data. Statistics is especially useful in drawing conclusions about a set of data from a sample of the data. (See mean, median, mode, normal distribution curve, sample, standard deviation and statistical significance.) Typical problem: estimating true value of parameters from a sample of data.
