“Not conforming to what was put in place before my time was me just not accepting limits on what I could do.” Taking a leaf out of cover star Ross Butler’s (page 68) book on how he overcame stereotypes, the leading Hollywood actor’s driven perspective serves as a starting point to this Non-Conformist issue.

The Men’s Folio team decided on such a focus for the annual art special in part to tackle the common Singaporean saying, “art won’t earn you any money” and term “starving artist”. With a desire to challenge these binary notions, the team successfully sought out bold narratives to be reckoned with.

Together with Izwan, digital editor Bryan Goh invited a group of creatives to the table — discussing hearts and souls that are poured into their artistry (page 54). Pit Firdaus Aris, designer of Studio Vetyver (page 52) and Felix Sng, co-founder of design studio Swell (page 53) also shared their minds on where their inspirations lie in creative work.

Artist Stephanie Jane Burt contributed sculptures from the Bottega Veneta’s Fall/Winter ’20 accessories (page 32), illustrator Natasha Hassan created an artwork as backdrop for the latest timepieces (page 46) and visual artist Taufiq Rahman lensed a moving narrative about migration (page 110).

There are also several breakthrough initiatives in this Non-Conformist issue. Augmented Reality was brought onto print for Braun Büffel’s latest accessories on page 36 while a fashion film feature (watch on Men’s Folio socials) was translated the stunning stills on page 78. Most notably, there is an entire fashion spread featuring local designers with street-casted models on page 98.

A discourse on empathy is explored on page 66 with Ayden Sng, Alfred Sng, Fariz Jabba and Noelle Woon. Fariz defines this value as “putting yourself out of your own head” while Noelle asserts, “coexisting… when people tell you their problems, you really have to feel though it”.
