Many winters of my childhood were spent navigating one piste after another, growing up and graduating from ski school and snow plough to red runs and vin chaud, quickly realising the off-piste pursuits were just as important as on the on-piste. A ski season is so much more than the ‘skiing’: from the new kit you invest in or the old favourites you dig out; finding the chicest chalets to the cosiest Air BnB; to tracking down the best raclette, pomme frites and hot chocolate. So this issue we bring you a line-up of some of the ways to experience the magic of the mountains.
Keeping to the winter theme, we also head to central Switzerland for an adventure centred around luxury living; to Azerbaijan for sledging, paragliding and snowy horse safaris; and to England for festivities aboard one of the world’s most beautiful trains.
For more sun-kissed experiences, the Seychelles, Maldives and Middle East are waiting, or come with us to the Congo rainforest for a walk through the wildest Eden.
As we close out this year, we look back at 2023 grateful for all our adventures, the places we’ve been and the people we’ve met, and remain hopeful for a year ahead that brings peace, unity and a collective mission that allows our beautiful world to bloom.
