First, take a deep breath - truly. Choosing to begin again is powerful, and it's a decision rooted in self-respect. The most important mindset shift to make? You don't have to 'earn' your way back into fitness, you just need to begin. Consistency trumps intensity, every time.

I haven't exercised in years and feel really unfit. I'd like to get back in shape. Where should I start?

Choosing to begin again is powerful, and it's a decision rooted in self-respect. The most important mindset shift to make? You don't have to 'earn' your way back into fitness, you just need to begin. Consistency trumps intensity, every time.

Start with 2-3 manageable workouts per week: 20-30 minutes is plenty.

Focus on foundational strength moves such as bodyweight squats, glute bridges, push-ups (even on the knees or against a wall), and simple core exercises like dead bugs or bird dogs. If you have access to light dumbbells, use them, but bodyweight is also excellent.

Walking deserves more credit than it gets: it's free, low-impact, boosts your cardiovascular base and helps rewire your routine around movement. A brisk 20-minute walk daily does more than most realise, especially when layered on top of strength work.

Also, don't skip mobility. Integrating a short warm-up with dynamic stretches or yoga-inspired flows helps reduce injury risk and improves posture, coordination, and how your body feels moving through space.

Most importantly, ditch the all-or-nothing mindset. It's not about smashing a perfect workout but showing up with what you have, where you are. You're not starting from scratch, you're starting from experience, and that wisdom will serve you far better than brute force.
