Spot the cause of your pain in seconds and fix it - fast

Family days out ruined when you need to lie down somewhere dark? Or perhaps you can't face going to the cinema or a concert, as you know it will cause a throbbing headache that you just can't shift. You're not the only one. In fact, more than a third* of Brits get a headache at least once a week, according to a UK study. Here's how to pinpoint the source of your pain – and what to do about it.

Persistent

✔ A constant, fluctuating pain, from moderate to severe

✔ Tearing or redness of the eye on the affected side

✔ Nasal congestion or a runny nose

Medication, such as indomethacin (prescribed by a GP) can usually help, says health practitioner Danielle Pates from Specscart. Drinking enough water and eating a well-balanced diet is essential, so cut down on processed food and alcohol.

Menopause

✔ Dull, throbbing, pulsing pain

✔ Sensitivity to light

✔ Nausea, dizziness and fatigue
