At the age of 28, Phemelo Seane saw her life change dramatically after suffering a fourth-degree tear during childbirth that ruptured her sphincter muscle.
The injury resulted in her needing a stoma, a surgically created opening that allows waste to leave the body through a bag attached to the abdomen.
Seane told Polokwane Observer that when it first happened, she was confused and did not understand what was going on.
"My doctor helped me understand that the situation is temporary and that I will undergo a reversal procedure in the future," she said.
While the physical challenges of living with a stoma are significant, Seane said the emotional impact has been equally difficult.
