Stoma: Adjusting to a new normal

A stoma is a surgically created opening in the abdomen that connects the bowel or urinary system to the outside of the body, diverting the normal passage of waste.

It allows faeces or urine to exit the body into a secure external pouch. According to Dr Miquel Maphoto, a general practitioner in the city with 20 years of clinical experience and 12 years in private practice, people living with a stoma need to make several lifestyle adjustments on a daily basis. These include:

· Hygiene routine: Changing or emptying the pouch becomes part of a daily routine. · Dietary awareness: Certain foods may need to be managed to reduce excess gas, odours or loose output.

· Hydration needs: People with a stoma face a higher risk of dehydration and should consciously drink more water.
