ROUTINE CARE FOR RANGE HOODS
The Home Handyman
|May/June 2026
In many homes, the kitchen is the centre of daily activity.
-
From simmering pots of stew to sizzling pans of boerewors, cooking creates heat, moisture, smoke, and grease. One appliance works quietly above it all to keep the air fresh and the kitchen comfortable namely the range hood.
Despite its important role, the range hood is often one of the most neglected appliances in the kitchen. Over time, grease, dust, and cooking residue build up inside the hood and its filters. This not only reduces efficiency but can also create unpleasant odours and even pose a fire risk if left unattended for too long.
Routine care is simple, requires only basic cleaning supplies, and can extend the life of your range hood while keeping your kitchen environment healthier.
Why regular maintenance matters
Range hoods are designed to remove airborne grease particles, smoke, heat, and moisture generated during cooking. Depending on the design, they either vent these contaminants outside or filter the air before recirculating it back into the kitchen.
As cooking vapours pass through the hood, grease particles are captured by the filters. Over time, these filters become saturated and airflow is restricted. When airflow drops, the hood has to work harder, becomes noisier, and removes less smoke and odour from the kitchen.
In homes where frying or high-heat cooking is common, grease buildup can happen surprisingly quickly. Regular maintenance ensures that the fan operates efficiently and the filters continue doing their job.
Routine care also protects nearby surfaces. When a range hood is clogged or underperforming, grease-laden air can settle on cabinets, walls, and ceilings, creating sticky residue that is far more difficult to remove.Understanding the parts of a range hood
