BUILD YOUR OWN BACKYARD FIRE PIT
The Home Handyman
|May/June 2026
There’s something deeply satisfying about building a fire pit with your own hands.
-
It’s not just the end result, the crackle of wood, the glow on a winter evening, but the process itself. Cutting, measuring, assembling... and then finally stepping back as that first fire catches. For DIY’ers, especially those who enjoy a good braai or simply gathering outdoors, a simple steel fire pit is one of the most rewarding DIY projects you can tackle over a weekend.
This design focuses on practicality and accessibility: a square fire pit built from thick scrap steel or a repurposed drum. It’s durable, compact, and forgiving enough for beginners, yet solid enough to last for years.
The idea behind the build
The concept is straightforward: a sturdy square base that contains and elevates your fire safely above ground. Steel is ideal because it handles high temperatures well and develops a rugged, attractive patina over time. Using scrap steel or an old barrel also keeps costs down and gives new life to materials that might otherwise go to waste.
The square shape makes measuring and assembly easier than circular builds, especially if you're working with flat sheet metal or salvaged plate.
Step-by-step guide
Step 1
Prepare your steel
Start by cleaning your steel. Remove rust, paint, or oil using a wire brush or grinder. This ensures better welds and a cleaner finish. If you're using a drum, cut it down to size, either halving it or cutting panels from it.
Take your time here. Poor preparation leads to weak joints and messy results.
Step 2
Measure and cut
