What coolant actually does

The engine in a modern vehicle generates a tremendous amount of heat during operation. Without a proper cooling system, temperatures inside the engine would rise rapidly and cause severe damage.

Coolant circulates through the engine and radiator, absorbing heat and carrying it away from critical components. The radiator then releases that heat into the surrounding air, helping the engine maintain a safe operating temperature.

But coolant does much more than simply control heat.

Antifreeze contains chemical additives that prevent corrosion inside the cooling system, protect metal components such as aluminium and steel, and stop the formation of rust or scale deposits. It also raises the boiling point of the liquid while lowering the freezing point, ensuring the system functions effectively in a wide range of temperatures.
