INDOOR WORKSHOP SETUP
The Home Handyman
|May/June 2026
There’s a moment in every DIY journey when the kitchen table or garage floor simply doesn’t cut it anymore.
-
Projects get bigger, tools multiply, and suddenly the idea of a dedicated indoor workshop starts to feel less like a luxury and more like a necessity.
For many DIY’ers, space is always at a premium. That spare room, part of a garage, or even a section of a storeroom becomes the natural choice. The challenge isn’t just finding the space - it’s making it work efficiently, safely, and comfortably.
Setting up an indoor workshop is less about having everything, and more about having the right things, arranged in the right way.
Start with the space you have
Before buying a single tool or building a workbench, take a step back and look at your available space. Whether it’s a 3m x 3m room or half a double garage, understanding how you'll move within that space is key.
Think in terms of workflow. Woodworking follows a natural sequence: material comes in, gets cut down, shaped, assembled, and then finished. Even in a compact workshop, arranging your tools to follow this flow makes a noticeable difference.
A common mistake is trying to fit too much into a small area. It’s tempting to fill every wall and corner, but overcrowding quickly leads to frustration, and accidents. Leaving clear pathways, even if they’re just 600mm to 800mm wide, allows you to move freely and work more confidently.
The workbench: Your anchor point
At the heart of any indoor workshop is the workbench. It’s where most of the real work happens—cutting, sanding, assembling, and problem-solving.
For most home setups, a bench around 800mm to 900mm high works well, depending on your height. The goal is to work comfortably without bending or straining your back. A sturdy top, ideally at least 18mm thick, provides the rigidity needed for accurate work.
