HPV jabs to protect girls from cancer

The Gauteng department of health has urged parents and guardians to support its human papillomavirus (HPV) single-dose vaccination campaign aimed at protecting girls from cervical cancer.

The campaign began yesterday and will run until 7 November. Eligible pupils are girls aged nine to 15, as well as Grade 6 and 7 pupils who missed their jabs.

"This life-saving initiative highlights the importance of vaccinating girls before the age of 15, as early protection significantly reduces the risk of developing cancer of the cervix later in life," the department said.
