A focus on leaves is an easy path to a stylish garden
Peaceful scene
It may be obvious, but green is the most vital colour in a garden. Not only is it the one we see most easily – perhaps that’s why it makes us feel relaxed – but it's also a rich palette in which to paint your garden. So, if you’re seeking a lush yet low-maintenance space, make foliage the star.
Enduring evergreensA backbone of evergreen leaves gives colour and interest across 12 months. Introduce them high and low for privacy and cohesion. Tall, dark, handsome types like yew and holly make brilliant backdrops against which brighter plants can shine. For a dash of tropical flair, opt for a dwarf fan palm (Chamaerops) or tree fern – though they will need protection over winter.
Mid-layer stalwarts include Fatsia japonica
