Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday announced a series of exemptions and revisions to Basic Customs Duty (BCD) across various sectors.
One of the key announcements was the full exemption of BCD on 36 life-saving drugs and medicines, which will be added to the existing list of exempted items.
The minister also proposed including six more life-saving medicines in the category that attracts a concessional customs duty of 5%. In addition, drugs and medicines under Patient Assistance Programmes, run by pharmaceutical companies, will continue to be fully exempt from BCD, provided they are supplied free of cost to patients.
